KAW Charity and Community Welfare Efforts

Kerala Association of Washington has been actively involved in community outreach programs towards the betterment of the community we live in and also in supporting charity initiatives in our homeland, Kerala.

KAW traditionally has been offering financial aid to our members in need and also for our less fortunate countrymen back in India, especially in Kerala. The funds usually come from voluntary donations from KAW members and also through matching donations from Microsoft, Boeing, Cingular, Washington Mutual and other organizations who offer 100% matching on donations to non-profit [501 (c) (3)] organizations. 100% of your donation to KAW goes directly to charity without any administrative expenses. Contact us if you would like to help our less fortunate brothers and sisters.

If you would like to make a donation towards the services we do, please make your check payable to "Kerala Association of Washington" and send to the Treasurer. If you like to know more aboout KAW's community outreach programs, please email KAW Secretary at Secretary KAW.

Help Uma (March 17th)

This was an urgent appeal to all KAW members initiated by our community member Divya Varma to help a little girl who is in critical condition.

Uma, the six year old daughter of Dr. Indira Menon and Dr. Pramod Kaila of Atlanta, has been recently diagnosed with Bone Marrow Failure aka Aplastic Anemia. This makes her vulnerable to bruises and causes all her blood counts to be low, which in turn makes her more prone to infections and anemia. Although the current treatment plan is immunosuppressive therapy, the only curative treatment is a Bone Marrow transplant.

Uma's family is searching desperately for a bone marrow match for her.National Marrow Registry is Eurocentric (over 60% Caucasian), hence people of South Asian origin (from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc.), need to come forward and register thereby increasing the likelihood of a good match for little Uma.

Hers is how we KAW community can help Uma:

  • * Contact a local recruiter by going to www.bethematch.org or calling 1-800-marrow2
  • * If you are eligible, join the National Marrow Registry by giving promo code: SAVEUMA
  • * If there is at least one person ready and eligible, KAW will assist with the Marrow Donation.
  • * Forward these details to all of your friends.
  • Please visit the website for more details: www.Helpuma.com. You may also contact Mr. Rajeev Menon at 678-386-7873.

FYI, the process of bone marrow donation is a very simple, non-invasive, and totally harmless to the donor. The process essentially involves the following simple steps:

  • 1. Undergo a mouth swab; NO NEEDLES OR BLOOD.
  • 2. If matched, provide blood sample for further testing to confirm a precise match.
  • 3. Final donation process itself is a simple blood donation.
