November 21: General Body Meeting

KAW Generable Body meeting was held on November 21 at Burien Library's multipurpose room to accept the amendments to the KAW By-Law. All recommendations were unanimously accepted at the meeting. The new By-Law was accepted with immediate effect. The EC filed an amendment to the Articles of Incorporation with the WA State's Corporations Division to make the By-Law in sync with our Articles of Incorporation.

The amendment of the current By-Law is necessitated by the differences in the Articles of Incorporation of Kerala Association of Washington, the existing By-Law of the Association, and the organization of the current and recent Executive Committees. For example, the current By-Law (and the Articles of Incorporation) stipulates that there shall only have five Executive Members in the Executive Committee where we currently have eight. The current By-Law does not have a clause to elect a Joint Secretary, nor does the Executive Committee include former President as an Ex-Officio member. And in certain cases, the current By-Law is vague on the responsibilities and accountabilities of the office bearers of the Association.

With the amendmends in place, the 2010 EC hopes that the ambiguities have been addressed.

September 18: Onam Celebrations

This year’s Onam Celebrations were held at the majestic Auburn Performing Arts Center on Saturday, September 18 from 11 AM to 5 PM. The auditorium, although slightly distant, comfortably seats 1000+, —one of the main reasons why we chose the Auburn PAC.

For the first time, the food was served in paper banana leaf, and we had the help of over 50 volunteers. Our count shows that we served sadya to 670 people. The sadya was served on a first come first serve basis, with preference given to program participants and members who’ve pledged to bring food for the potluck. KAW thanks all the volunteers to make this as effortless as possible.

High quality program were another attraction of this year's celebrations. We had strict program submission guidelines that enabled us to maintain the quality of the programs. Our MCs, Aneesh and Laxmi did an excellent job. Solid performance from the two to keep the audience entertained. Sooraj entertained the crowd as Maveli. KAW thanks Aneesh, Laxmi, and Sooraj!

Our sincere thanks to you all for the overwhelming support we had at the Onam Celebrations. To see the photos and videos of the program shared by KAW members, please friend us on Facebook and take a look at this collection as well.

February 28: Bone Marrow Registration Drive for Anwin

If you haven’t registered to be a marrow donor please register with NMDP. Finding matching marrow for South Asians is really challenging as the registry got only very few members. You can register either through blood sample or through a swab of cheek cells. Collecting cheek cell is as easy as rubbing a swab against the inner side of your cheek few times and it takes less than a minute! The facts & myths about being a marrow donor can clear many of your fears to become a donor.

KAW has worked with NMDP Seattle Chapter and is arranging a Marrow Registry Drive (cheek swab method) on February 28th Sunday at 1 PM to 4 PM at Hindu Temple & Cultural Center, Bothell.

Address: 3818 212th ST SE, Bothell WA 98021
Ph: (425) 483-7115

Anwin & Abel Fund Raising Update:

EC 2009 would like to thank your generous support in the fund raiser for Anwin & Abel. We raised a total of $7,000 with the matching grants from Microsoft. We will be using these funds for the Bone Marrow Transplant of Anwin, once he gets the match.

Abel successfully underwent Stem Cell Transplant during the third week of January from his twin sister. He is still monitored at Vellore hospital for any post transplant reactions/complications.

Anwin has very low cell count, that makes him very susceptible to various infections. While Abel was undergoing SCT, Anwin got kidney infection and admitted to Vellore Hospital ICU for couple of weeks in critical condition. He has survived the situation and has been discharged from the hospital now.

In the month of November 2009 Anwin had got 4 potential matches from German marrow registry, and everybody was hoping one of them to match in the high resolution matching process. But unfortunately all of them turned negative. The family is in desperate search for a matching marrow donor.
