Onam' 06 celebrations
The Malayali Community in Washington state celebrated Onam with a mega-event on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at the IKEA Performing Arts Center in Renton with the sumptuous Onam Sadhya & a Grand Arts Fest.. With immense pride, we announce that KAW registered almost 80 new members on Onam Day with the total membership now at..197 families!!

1. Onam Sadhya
The Onam Sadhya started at 12.00 p.m and we expected 400.. But the turn out was..you almost guessed it..540+!!! Landed in trouble? Not really..except that one of us had to rush for extra plates. It's a testimony to our cooperation and unity and that there was plenty of food to cater to such a huge gathering..Accolades goes to each of you... KAW formally thanks Lead Food Coordinator Mr. Madhu Kangara, other Coordinators Mr. Babu Parayil & Mrs. Roopa M and also Mrs. Mercy Parayil, Mrs. Neeni George, Mrs. Suja Wilson, Mr. Aniyan & Mrs. Valsam Mattamel, Mr. Paul K John, Mr Raju & Mrs Leela Abraham, Mr. Suresh Goraphy etc for a job well done. Special thanks to KAW Treasuer Mr. George Parappuram, EC members Mr. Wilson David & Mr. Ram Pranam and volunteers Mr. Thomas Mudanyankavil and the Lucky-Draw 'Boys' Team for their great work at the Registration counter.

2. Onam Arts Fest
The Onam'06 Arts Fest kicked off at 2.15 p.m with the Welcome Address from KAW President, Mr. Babu Parayil. Honorable first President of KAW, Mr.Krishnan Nambudiripad delivered the Onam Message. KAW felicitated one of its founding members Mr. John Titus for being nominated to Washington Technology Council Board. Ms. Jerrin Ann Thomas bagged the Graduation Gift this year. MCees Mr. Mathew Mathan & Mrs. Meera Venkatesh anchored the whole show of 20 programs, a mixture of Solo/Group Songs, Classical, Semi-Classical performances, Cinematic shows, Instrumental Music and Comedy programs. The programs were off to a festive start with "Thiruvonakkazhcha"... an aesthetic program featuring 21 of our little kids in different Kerala attires welcoming the great king "Mahabali". Towards the End of this item, our Mahabali (Ramesh Shivam) entered the stage in grand style. The "Pulikali Team" and "Panchavaadyam" in the background enhanced the entry. Seattle Thurivathira Team led by Meera Venkatesh performed the elegant folk dance of Kerala, "Thiruvathira". Their lovely dance echoed the native simplicity and lyrical grace of this Onam Dance form. If it was Madhu Kangara & party's turn to stole the show next with their recital of Vallathol's timeless classic "Bharathamennu kettal...", the "Nruthyathi" dance presented by Soumya Pradeep & Party was simply outstanding for their amazing coordination and rhythmical steps. Then, it was time for another delightful performance by the kids - Group Song 'Poovili Poovili Ponnonamayi, cordinated by Rohini Nair & Ajita. The two most promising young dancers of KAW, Shruti Hariprasad & Angela Goraphy presented the dance "Sasikala Charthiya", with traditional lamp-lighting while Sreejith O.S & team celebrated the vibrancy of Kerala with their elegant composition "Rhythms of Kerala". "Shivadam", the picturesque classical dance by the trio of Smitha Santhosh, Sindhu Jayaprakash & Mili Ojus portrayed the multifarious moods of Lord Shiva. Disco Time for the Audience with the Dance "Where's the Party Tonight?" by another gifted youngster Dimbu Thomas. Continued..

Onam' 06 Arts Fest.. Continued..
Laughters for the day were supplied in abundance with "SaralaMani Kidnap Case' by Ojus John, Jojo Chalissery, Jayaprakash Radhakrishnan & team - Story of the Kottayam Maharaja 'Sasi" & co. getting trapped by the Lankan Supremo 'Ravanan' & his very tricky Minister and also 'Ananthapuriyile Kaayika Visheshangal' by Jyothish Nair, Ashley Ilanjikkal, Santhosh Pillai & team - Story of the hilarious Olympics Selection process at Ananthapuri. Manju Jyothish & Soumya Pradeep presented the graceful dance "Timeless", about the Rhythm of Love. The next classical Item "Swasthi" by Julie Ashley with the theme 'Sita's 'AgniPareekhsha' virtually captivated the audience. Angela Goraphy, a prize-winner at the World Malayali Meet danced to the tune of 'Gange' song from the film 'Vadakkunnathan'. Audience also enjoyed the Solo Songs from Shairus Palottil & Smitha Santhosh. Namitha John & Divya Raj presented an eye-beholding Hindi folk dance. Kalpana Hariprasad and party staged an entertaining Fusion Dance "Generation Gap", depicting the various stages/ actors of Malayalam Filmdom. After the lively variety musical number "Unplugged" by Rex George, Sajan Mohammed & Ramya, the Evening came to a grand finale with "Dance Masthi", a blend of Indian, Classical & Western dances by Susan John & party followed by the foot-tapper "Randakka Randakka.." by Mercy Frederick & Team. In short, the 540+ Audience were treated to some virtuoso performances by the 70+ artists on stage!!! One of main drivers behind this event, KAW Secretary Mr. Santhosh Nair delivered the Vote of Thanks to the gathering. KAW thanks Lead Coordinator Mr. Ojus John, Coordinators Mr. Santhosh Nair & Mr. Jyothish Nair and volunteers Mr Ashish Premraj, Mr Pramoth Ramakrishnan etc and all others who helped this make such a great event.

Coming soon !!! ...Talent Fest..Nov 11
The KAW Executive Committee met on September 29th to assess the Onam Program and to discuss future plans. The EC opined that the Onam program was a big success, financially as well! EC also noted down the "Lessons Learned" from this year's Onam program incorporating suggestions/feedback from KAW members too. One of the most important decisions by the EC is to conduct the Talent Fest for kids on Nov 4th 2006. We will also be proudly celebrating the 50th anniversary of the formation of our state. Watch out for the detailed email from the Program Coordinators..

KAW Malayalam classes!
As you may know, KAW's Malayalam course started on September 17, 2006. The classes are being held at convenient Public Libraries from 2:00-4:00 PM every Sunday for 10 weeks. We received a great response and the Registration for this year's classes are currently closed. KAW specially thanks Malayalam Classes Coordinator Mr. Ram Pranam & volunteers Mrs. Roopa Manoj & Mrs. Latha Thomas for this great Initiative.
